What is unique about Adler International Learning?

At Adler, we believe that a combination of six criteria makes the Adler Coaching Programs unique and effective: depth, breadth, applied learning, experiencing your own coaching, in-person contact, and quality of trainers and mentors.

· The depth of the Adler program comes from its connection with theories of human change that have been tested in other contexts for over a century.

· The breadth of the Adler program comes from including the broadest spectrum of coaching principles and approaches. Graduates have the freedom to explore many specific techniques because they have this broad foundation. They also have the flexibility to modify techniques to fit different situations because, through our program, they understand the principles underlying specific techniques.

· At Adler we stress experiential, hands-on, applied learning. We believe you must use the skills to own them. From day one of the Foundations Course, and throughout the Certificate program, you will coach under the supervision of faculty so that you will DO coaching as well as KNOW coaching.

· Our approach to coaching skills training includes your own one-on-one individual coaching sessions. This gives you a taste of being coached, as well as encouraging you to set your intentions before and to set up an action plan after the training.

· Adler’s training is mainly face-to-face, with teleclasses and distance learning as supplements. We feel that nothing can replace personal contact as an aid to learning.

What’s important about Alfred Adler's contribution to coaching?

The philosophical foundation of the Adler Schools is rooted in the science-of-living system developed by Alfred Adler (1870-1937). Dr. Adler was a Viennese psychiatrist whose theories were far enough ahead of their time that they continue to be considered current. Adlerian Psychology emphasizes the uniqueness of every individual and stresses the individual’s relationship with society.

Adler has been called the “father of coaching.” He recognized the intricate interplay of social/cultural and family/individual life. He thought of mind and body as an integrated whole. He gave credit to people's creativity in solving problems, even if the solution created more problems. And, most importantly, he wanted to apply his theories to everyday life, not just to subjects in a research study.

The Adler School International Learning recognizes strong parallels between Adlerian principles and coaching precepts. We highlight those congruencies to provide an additional context and framework for students to consider and use in their coaching, but do not actively teach Adlerian theory in our coaching classes.

Adlerian theory may be understood & remembered using the acronym “SUPER”:

S: Social interest is a barometer of mental health, and connectedness is essential. The “S” can also be seen to stand for “service to others”.
U: Unity of the individual. In contrast to atavistic models (such as ego/id), Adlerian theory holds the premise that there is something that unites us in some style. The whole of the person is more than the sum of his/her parts.
P: Private logic. We don’t experience reality directly, we filter it through our beliefs, assumptions and experience.
E: Equality. We’re not the same, but we’re equal, and equally entitled. Mutual respect and dignity are essential concepts in Adlerian thought.
R: Reasons for our behavior. Behavior moves towards our goals, and our actions are purposeful towards those goals. Our conclusions create a pre-formed inner logic.

Adler's core philosophical assumption:

We believe that we are all caught in a paradoxical tension between being ourselves and being in relationship with others. On the one hand, we are all unique individuals, with a strong need and desire to express our unique selves fully in our life and work. On the other hand, we are embedded in a web of relationships with other individuals, a member of multiple systems, and irretrievably part of humanity.

Our creativity in resolving this paradoxical tension between self-expression and embeddedness determines, to a significant extent, our level of success and fulfillment. We believe that the key to resolving this paradox lies in using our unique selves to make a contribution to others.

We see coaching as a profession that distinguishes itself by helping people to bring their choices and actions more in line with their unique “best self”, and to connect more creatively with the deep human desire to make a contribution to the betterment of humanity, by using their strengths, values and vision in service of others, whether at home, at work or in the community.

Adler School of Professional Coaching provides transformative learning opportunities for coaches to marshal their own strengths and experience, in highly effective and meaningful ways, to support positive change and development in other individuals and organizations. 

Adler teaches a powerful and flexible approach to coaching that is grounded in time tested theory and practical application, and works in any context. Our programs provide a broad array of tools and techniques that allow Adler coaches to choose what best fits the situation and their own unique style. However, our approach is not driven by those tools and techniques. Adler’s coaching approach is anchored in core elements of mindset and philosophical/theoretical principles that support students in shifting from merely “doing” coaching to truly “BEing” a coach.
